How to Use a Straight Razor

How to Use a Straight RazorStraight razors were used up until the time the safety blade was invented to remove unsightly facial hair from a man’s face. But the need to get a baby soft shave has once again become popular. If you wish to master the art of using a straight razor there are a few things you need to know.

1. Thoroughly prep.

Don’t just pull out the straight razor and get to work on your face. Either use a hot towel or a hot shower to soften your skin so it is easier to shave the hair. Using a straight razor is dangerous work so take it slow at first.

2. Soak your brush in Hot water.

After your face is prepped you then must prep your tools. This includes the soap brush. Once it is done soaking in water rinse out the excess water from the brush and fill it with soap.

3. Wet your face and lather up.

Use the brush to put the soap on your face until there is a thick lather on all the hair you wish to eliminate. Use the badger brush in the painting motion. Use a towel to wipe away extra soap. If your hair is coarse let the soap sit on your face for 5-10 minutes.

4. Stretch your skin taut so the blade can get as close as possible.

This will also help prevent any nicks and cuts you may incur.

5. Use the 20 degree angle for an optimum shave.

The goal is to cut hair as close to the skin as possible but you aren’t using the modern cartridge blade you are using a smaller version of a knife to remove your hair, view it as such.

6. Use three passes to get the best shave.

If you are in a hurry you can use single swipes. But if you want the best shave use two short and one long pass over the skin. Shave once in the direction of the hair growth, once sideways across the hair, and finally against the hair growth. The third pass is the most dangerous so be very careful.

7. Rinse with cold water to seal your pores and freshen up your skin.

8. Dry your razor with toilet paper to prevent rusting.

9. Strop the blade with leather, and apply oil to protect it from damage and rust.

10. Rinse your brush and hang it upside down so it will dry completely before the next shave.

There is a certain empowerment that comes with knowing how to use a straight razor, and while it may not fit with every man’s schedule it is something every man should know how to do.
