Grooming Differences of Men and WomenWe know that men and women are different on many levels but as it turns out there are real biophysical differences that men need to address in order to have healthy skin. Let’s take a look at some of the grooming differences of men and women and some of the grooming products that are unisex and ones needed just for men.

Oilier Skin

Men have larger sebaceous glands that are designed to help his skin from the elements by using sebum, a lubricant. They will notice this especially in their T-zone area of the forehead and nose. While this contributes to wrinkle reduction, it leaves skin more prone to greasiness and even acne.

Thicker Skin

One of the main reasons that skin is different between the sexes is because of androgen. This is the hormone that’s the male equivalent of estrogen; it turns boys into men. The result is deeper voices, sperm production and between 20 percent to 30 percent thicker skin. The good thing is that thicker skin resists wrinkles but for men, it thins gradually while women’s skin stays roughly the same until about age 50.

Facial Hair

Women shave select areas of their bodies some of the time. Most men need to shave their faces every day. Shaving naturally exfoliates the skin meaning it scrapes off the dead skin. However, these microscopic particles can deposit themselves in the pores causing painful ingrown hairs.

While some of these issues are similar to those experienced by women, that still doesn’t mean that raiding her medicine cabinet is a good idea. Instead, you can learn a few things about her grooming routine and apply it to your own.

• Men need to adopt a routine of twice a day cleansing to keep skin in tip top shape and to control the greasiness. Using regular soap to wash your face won’t work; it will only strip away the natural oils. You can use cleansers with glycolic acid to help repair your skin. For deep cleaning, you can use a facial scrub twice a week. When using a scrub, don’t scrub your skin raw; products like these know how to do that so all you need to do is gently massage the scrub into your skin and wash away.

• After shaving, your skin is going to need some soothing. Alcohol-based aftershave is not a good idea. Not only does it burn but it also dries your skin. Your best bet is to use a product with salicylic acid to prevent breakouts and soothe your skin after shaving.

• Moisturizing your skin may seem counterintuitive because you have naturally oilier skin but if you don’t want it to get too oily, using a moisturizer is the best way to control it.

The truth is apart from the packaging and marketing, many men’s grooming products are pretty much the same as women. It’s just that, if you’re going to be manly about your skin care, pink and fruity just won’t cut it.
