Young, old, male or female… anyone can experience back pain to a degree that makes sex uncomfortable. For some, it may even be so serious that they eliminate sex from their lives. It’s unfortunate that many of the same nerves that bring us pleasure can switch to cause unbearable pain with only the slightest change of motion or position. At the same time, unless it is the result of a major injury, a degenerative condition, or a spinal defect, there are a variety of ways for you to continue enjoying sex without subjecting yourself to future pain.
Since most back pain that occurs during sex is lower back, a simple support can do wonders. Take a turn on bottom and roll up a towel or place a pillow under your lower hips. Keep your knees elevated/bent during sex as this will keep your lower back stretched instead of arched which often relieves pressure on stressed nerves.
If laying flat on your back is uncomfortable, consider laying sideways or try standing or seated positions. By disengaging your back muscles from the sex act, you decrease your chance for pinching or irritating pain nerves. Kneeling offers the fullest opportunity for the back to relax.

Obviously, if you’re in pain despite trying these tips, seek the advice of a doctor or chiropractor. There may be something serious going on that requires medical attention. However, if it is intermittent or manageable, it might be that sex can help your back pain. Sex often engages your lower back and core muscles. These, in turn, support your spine. When strong and in good condition, these muscles correct and prevent unhealthy spinal curvature – the source of most lower back. Sex works these muscles back to strength, and can, over time, relieve and keep it from coming back.
