Foods that Soothe Sore MusclesAs we grow older, we begin to notice subtle changes in our bodies. Changes that we may never have noticed before in the past, but ones which now creep up on us as we begin to grow older. Little nagging aches and pains in our joints and muscles for example, can make life difficult and sometimes frustrating in the process too. No matter how severe the pain may be, we can all agree on the fact that if we could choose, we’d rather not suffer with any kind of muscle or joint pain in the slightest. Whether it’s because we’re growing older, because we’ve been pushing ourselves extra hard in the gym, or even a little mixture of both, it can’t be denied that these sore muscles can make life painful and difficult, and should be sorted out and corrected if at all possible. Some people go to chiropractors or have massages or physiotherapy treatments, while others rely on painkillers and ice packs, but what about if you could fix the problem, as easily as altering the foods you eat? Studies have found that certain foods contain certain properties, anti inflammatory ones for instance, which can soothe sore muscles, and therefore help reduce or completely eradicate all swelling and pain in our muscles.

Blueberries – Blueberries are often referred to as “super fruits” and for good reason too. They’re low in fat, taste great, and are absolutely crammed full of vitamins, minerals, and healthy antioxidants. Certain scientific and medical studies have found evidence to suggest that the antioxidants contained inside blueberries, may be able to fight off, and reduce the levels of free radicals and chemicals inside our bodies, which may cause them to fatigue and become sore and tired. Lactic acid for instance, is a substance which builds up in our muscles as we exercise. The more lactic acid there is, the more the muscles become sore and begin to fatigue, until eventually it results in painful muscle cramps. These antioxidants however, may be able to ward off chemicals such as lactic acid, or at least keep them at bay and reduce the levels found in our muscles.

Ginger – Ginger is one of the best natural anti inflammatory foods you could ever wish for. It is high in a number of different compounds, many of which contain natural anti inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce painful swelling in, and around certain parts of the body, including the muscles. Osteoarthritis for instance, can be controlled pretty effectively by consuming regular extracts of ginger, or foods high in natural ginger content.

Pomegranates – Another fruit which is packed full of beneficial antioxidants, is the delicious pomegranate. It contains a number of antioxidants and vitamins which are great for the immune system, which also act as a natural NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), the same kind of pharmaceutical drugs such as ibuprofen. Studies have shown that people who consumed pomegranate juice on a daily basis, were able to recover from their workouts much quicker than those who didn’t consume the juice. They also reported much less muscle soreness and achiness overall.
