5, 4, 3, 2, 1……….Happy New Year!! Now that all the celebrations are winding down it’s time to start the annual New Year’s resolution. Unfortunately most resolutions don’t make it past the end of January, but there are ways to improve your chances of sticking with your goals.
If your plan is to shed some of those holiday pounds or even jump start a major weight loss you have to have a plan of attack. Instead of setting a general goal to lose weight you should write down exactly how much weight you want to lose for the whole year and break that down into smaller monthly increments. If you are going to get a gym membership make sure the location is close and convenient and enlist a workout buddy or a trainer to help keep you motivated and accountable. Most of all don’t forget about your diet. You can slave at the gym and burn 500 calories but if you make poor diet decisions it can eliminate all of your hard work.
This resolution can be many resolutions in one. For example quitting smoking, brining brown bag lunches to work and cooking more healthy meals at home can all help your overall health and budget. So where do you start? To help ensure your success you need to be prepared. First thing you will want to do is get all of your bills together and save your receipts so you can see where your money is going. If you’re not a computer wiz look for the Microsoft excel budget templates you can find all types of budget worksheets with the formulas already built in.
Once you have handle on where your money goes you can start to see where you can cut back. Whether it is one less dinner out or one less trip to the mall you can make your savings resolution a reality. Also don’t forget to cash in on your companies 401k plans or stock options. If planning all your finances out is too difficult you can always increase your 401k contribution so when you get paid your savings plan has already started.
No matter what your goal is make sure you have a plan and a clear path for longevity. Stay with it and all the best for health and prosperity in 2012.
